Guest Speaker – Alison Bird completed her master’s degree work on the earthquakes of the Haida Gwaii region, Alison began her work as earthquake seismologist in 1997, with the International Seismological Centre in England, reviewing global seismicity. In 2000, Alison returned to Vancouver Island to work with the Geological Survey of Canada. She analyses western Canada’s earthquakes and routinely responds in the wake of those felt by members of the public or considered of interest by the news media (giving roughly 600 interviews over the past decade). She is a lecturer for part of a bi-monthly course in Light Urban Search and Rescue, and is involved in numerous outreach activities, as part of her participation in Public Safety Geoscience. Alison is passionate about seismic-resistant engineering, in encouraging mitigation techniques for at-risk communities and in educating the public about earthquake hazards. Alison also visited Haida Gwaii as part of a response team after the 2012 magnitude 7.8 earthquake – investigating the event’s impact and acting as liaison between field survey crews and the communities.
Alison is an exceptional speaker and has a great video presentation.
